Dark Angels of the Runway
We’ve been hooked on the “dark angel” aesthetic lately, and while Victoria’s Secret is the most well-known for their angel imagery, we wanted to find and share work from other designers that inspires us.
Mugler 1997
Both the Spring and Fall (‘Mythical Creatures’) 1997 Mugler shows include references to mythical creatures and angelic themes, as well as insects and technology. Many of the looks remind us of Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent, with powerful otherworldly vibes.
McQueen for Givenchy S/S 1997, 1999
Alexander McQueen is the king of dark and awe-inspiring design, so it’s only fitting that much of his work fits this theme. McQueen was chief designer at Givenchy from 1996-2001, and his premiere runway show for Givenchy, titled ‘Search for the Golden Fleece’ was filled with angelic imagery.
Alexander McQueen S/S 1999
McQueen used angelic imagery in his own brand as well, in 1999 creating delicate angel wings out of wood.
Jean Paul Gaultier S/S 2007
Alexander McQueen, F/W 2010
McQueen’s last show ever, ‘Angels and Demons’ featured more traditional tailoring and references to medieval style.
2018 Heavenly Bodies Met Gala
The theme of 2018’s Met Gala was ‘Heavenly Bodies’, and therefore there was a lot of angelic and religious imagery. As a die-hard Lana fan, Lana’s look has especially stuck with me from this Met Gala.
Victoria’s Secret
The Victoria’s Secret fashion show is best known for its use of wings and angel imagery, and is definitely the most mainstream angel imagery in fashion, with the Victoria’s Secret fashion show being widely publicized and talked about every year.
Blumarine, S/S 2024
This collection had very explicit angel imagery, juxtaposed with more nightlife-ready outfits.
Dolce & Gabbana S/S 24
While not explicitly angel-themed, the aesthetic of these outfits fits with the themes that we’re craving. It includes lots of corsetry, lace, and the contrast of well-tailored silhouettes with flowing chiffon and lace.
Iris van Herpen, F/W 2022
Iris van Herpen has done amazing work creating these futuristic sculptural looks. While also not explicitely referencing angels, her creations evoke futuristic battle angel vibes (which is also well demonstrated in Grimes’ Iris van Herpen looks.)
Bella Pietro 2024
Bella Pietro’s runway debut this winter was in a synagogue and full of dark and angelic looks with a hint of religious influence.
IRL
If you’re in NYC and like this aesthetic, highly recommend checking out Angels Boutique on Ave A, they have a great assortment of vintage and new pieces from independent designers, and always a great vibe!
Some of my favorite pieces I’ve gotten from there is jewelry by Eventyr Verden.
